I think I read this in school, but picked it up to complete one of the Goodreads challenges. I am crying in the club (at work). It’s written from the point of view from a young girl, and I think it was executed perfectly. It’s heart wrenching seeing Esperanza take in her unfair, and often cruel, world through her own naive and whimsical lens.

The stories in this book touched me. I related to so much: growing up in the city, Catholic school, childhood naivety, loss of innocence, the plight of being a girl/woman. So often girls and woman can feel like they exist just for the enjoyment and betterment of men. Esperanza didn’t necessarily push back on this narrative, but many of her neighbor’s stories showed the necessity for the woman on Mango street to bend their will in order to survive.
