The stories in this book touched me. I related to so much: growing up in the city, Catholic school, childhood naivety, loss of innocence, the plight of being a girl/woman. So often girls and woman can feel like they exist just for the enjoyment and betterment of men. Esperanza didn’t necessarily push back on this narrative, but many of her neighbor’s stories showed the necessity for the woman on Mango street to bend their will in order to survive.

It’s an interesting and profound book. It’s an easy read with the little vignettes that are very “child-like” in some ways but considering the POV it makes sense. I think vignettes make sense like “core memories” reflecting upon your childhood given your current ( adult) position. I thought it was a beautiful contradiction how simple and sweet the vignettes were written while covering such heavy topics that left your with an after-burn in your heart. I do wish there were more to the vignettes to give more detail/depth and that the story continued a little more ( past 8th grade I think) .
