i read this along kawakami's people from my neighborhood which has a similar premise and of the same length. of the two, i'm having a hard time connecting with this, and that's saying something since both have short chapters. i know it's a legit writing style but i dislike books that don't use quotation marks in their texts. no biggie, just a preference. none of the individuals made a mark on me. like who are these people? i don't care enough about cathy

It was a decent book. I usually like books written in verse or discontinuous sentences because sometimes they hit hard. But, they need to have continuity in terms of plot, which this book lacked. I did like the general idea of the book but the stories jumped back and forth so much that I lost track of what was going on at some point and couldn't connect to any of the characters, especially Esperanza. I do like short chapters but only when they are impactful. It's possible that I didn't really get the point of the book because I couldn't directly relate to it but I think the writing style was not for me.
