Ohhh, this was so good.
I loved this world and the intricate way magic is a part of it. The world is brutal and mean, but the way it is presented, I didn't think it was right in your face.
The way the author describes things is breath-taking. And the pacing worked well for me. I was constantly intrigued and it felt like things were always moving forward.
I loved how real Demi felt as a character. Sometimes you get books where the MC is so egotistical it gets annoying. But Demi has doubts and struggles, but pushes on to just make things right. But Demi cries a lot though and I found that a little annoying. *sorry*

I've read that this is an adult book, but for me, I read it not knowing and it felt YA to me.

I feel bad giving this book such a low rating. The Nigerian mythology and hints to African culture were super cool, let that be said. But I actually think this book could’ve benefited from being a little slower. It felt like every chapter, the characters learned a new story-shattering truth. Like how many plot twists/discoveries does one story need, ya know. We follow Demi who is an Oluso who are a people born with magic powers. The Aje are people without magical abilities. Upon losing her mother, she runs away and accepts a deal to kidnap the prince who is a boy linked to her origin story. There are so many moving parts in this book which I guess is normal for fantasy. I kinda want to read the second one to see where the plot goes and because the covers are pretty but I’ll give it time.

I had a good time with this book. I liked the magic system. I loved the worldbuilding and the lore. I adored Demi -- I thought she was strong and despite her struggles, it is easy to see she's still learning and growing as a person with impulsive and reckless actions.

There were a lot of terms introduced that were spelled similarly that I had a hard time remembering what they meant, but thankfully they didn't impact my understanding. She included a "dramatis personae" at the end which was helpful because there were a TON of characters, so I could look them up at the back to help me remember who's who. The last 'act' seemed to escalate really quickly compared to everything else in the plot. Very well written
