3.5 in all honesty. It’s a bit not up to the level of the other books in the series, both plot wise and character study.

I do like this series, but I thought this was a little thinner than most. I should probably go back and read the one(s) before it again, since I've forgotten some of the references in the text.

OTOH, it had foxes, which is always a good thing.

This wasn't by any chance the most substantial thing Bujold has ever written, but it was fun, gripping and adorable in parts. I always want more Desdemona, but the worldbuilding in this series is just so satisfying and good. And Penric is a protagonist whose innate decency and desire to do the right thing by those he comes across make him a pleasure to be around.

I am seriously thinking about getting the omnibus.

This would be one of the strongest Penric entries yet, had the good-to-pretty-great mystery not been solved literally out of nowhere. Until that point I was quite enjoying the intrigue and characters, but the reveal is very weak, and after that the book hangs around wrapping things up a bit too haphazardly. I wouldn't tell anyone to avoid this or anything, but Bujold's 'for the hell of it' series definitely continues as such.

Another delightful episode in the growing saga of Penric and Desdemona, this one slotted in rather earlier than recent episodes. These are an enjoyable, light read with distinct overtones of paranormal detective stories.
