I couldn’t connect with the characters. Their developmental arc felt thin, and some of the description felt over-the-top.  And while there were 2 obviously POC as supporting characters, the only mention of their race was their description of their appearance. No conversation or consideration of what it would be like to grow up in an all witchy white town with white witchy history. Spoiler: Like Talia can see ghosts. This could have been a cool moment to include some American history of Black and/or Indigenous people of the area. And for Talia to discuss her relationship with being a white descendant of Eastern Europeans mystics. But instead she sees a little (presumably white) girl who died of an illness and it’s never mentioned again.

Most redeeming quality was the mention of southern Illinois. The magic was interesting. It’s on par with Hunger Games writing, but yeah just can’t finish it.

It was okay. I honestly found Talia a little grating & petulant.

And the ending I feel would have been better served with someone other than the winner winning. Too many good things befell the main character & it wasn't spread around enough to the other characters.
