This one was a win, I don't know if the plot was that excellent or the writing style, but I really enjoyed this one.

This was a difficult read for me. There were so many characters and descriptions of sexual acts which is a no for me personally. Plus there was quite a bit of violence and trauma that made it an event harder read for me personally. I won’t be rereading but at glad I got out of my comfort zone with this book

After finishing this I am struggling to find words for a review. I can't say too much really, or it could spoil certain aspects of the story. For this reason I will be brief, but please excuse me because it's hard to put into words.

This novel is a moving story about a family and their head, Orquidea. Orquidea is peculiar but loves her family fiercely. She is mysterious even to her loved ones. She's a strong feminine character who inspires love and loyalty in her children and grandchildren. Her home in Four Rivers was forged with her blood, sweat, and tears and her family feels safe there. When she calls the family together to receive their inheritance, they are unsure if she is being serious.

Years later, when Orquidea's family members have gone back to their lives they find that their mothers and grandmother's story isn't quite over just yet.

I originally picked this from BOTM because it's partially set in Ecuador (my bestie is from Ecuador). I can safely say that I am loving this author and want to read more of her works, regardless of where the stories are set.

Okay I have two issues with this. Don't get me wrong, I did like it! But I have two issues:
1. I thought that this was YA, so I was a little confused as the story progressed; and
2. I wish I hadn't listened to the audiobook because I feel like I lost a lot of the threads of the story when I didn't have the physical book in front of me.

I went into this thinking it it was paranormal fantasy YA and instead found that it was adult magical realism. That is absolutely NOT the book's fault. It's my fault for not looking into it more closely before picking it up. But as a result, this was not at all what I expected it would be. Instead, it was...weird? It was definitely magical realism weird, and if I'd known that I would have been prepared for the weirdness. But I wasn't. And it threw me every time something happened.

Anyway, this was good but I was still left with the feeling that I would have liked this more if I'd read it with my eyeballs and not my ears.
