This book might not tickle everyone’s facts, but for certain people it’ll speak to your soul.
I can’t say what type of people those are, so read it and find out.

I liked that it was through the power of her family that Orquidea finally rid herself of her abuser.
I enjoyed the echos of Encanto and Cocoa in the heritage parts of the book - ancestors visiting and helping the living - passing down magical gifts.

This could have been **** but it just isn't. The magic is great, but the humdrum details of the umpteen families of uninteresting people just killed it for me.
Sometimes a short story expanded to a novel just comes across as a bloated short story.
With the family stuff trimmed, this might have been a good novella.
And why does there always have to be a circus when this type of magic is invoked?
And what happened to Enrique, who suddenly became a pussycat?

This one was a huge disappointment. The writing is beautiful, the protagonist, multi-layered and interesting. My issue here was that there's this trend of shoehorning specific characters or topics into a book that I'm either sick of reading or have no interest in reading at all. As the story progressed, these topics were brought up more and more, which didn't work for me. DNF'd 65% through. But to be clear, it isn't a bad book, it just wasn't a book for me.
