This book was fine. I struggled to care about the plot and the characters. The characters were decent, the plot was alright, and the writing style was okay.

This story was cute. I didn’t like the characters in the beginning, but they grow on you throughout. It gets a lot better at the end of the story. Not really my kind of thing, but I appreciated all the sci-fi/fantasy references.

Absolutely fun and whimsical, a real palate cleanser of a book. The comedy-of-errors in the gender-bent Prince and the Pauper plot line are so cute, and any attendee of DragonCon will be charmed by the many homages.

That said, avoid this book if you don’t like pop culture references, because I don’t think a single sentence occurs without one (I understood maybe half of them?). Be forewarned that the HP references are plentiful.

This was a very fun, quick read, with great character dynamics and a lot of pop culture and fandom references, a few of which made me especially happy to see. I admire Poston for creating an entire franchise and fandom specifically for her books, and appreciate that she used her story as a way to comment on the toxic side many fandoms have.

That aside, while I did like this book, I wasn’t truly attached to the characters. I continued reading because I was curious, rather than truly invested.

Also, I wish we’d gotten a bit more from the ending, especially regarding the two budding romances. I shipped both of them for the majority of the story, and was a bit disappointed by the lack of details after feelings were finally confirmed to be mutual.

Representation
  • sapphic protagonist
  • Japanese side character
  • Black sapphic side character
  • sapphic romance (f/f)
  • queer side characters (includes two sapphic couples and one achillean (m/m))
