When describing or reviewing this book I mostly think “nice”. Five Survive was a very nice book. The suspense was great, the character conflicts were nice, the twists were good, the build-up was cool, the representation of grief and adhd-like experiences of red was good. It wasn’t perfect - sometimes the repetition (although clearly purposeful) was  too much for me, some of the character relations could’ve been more fleshed out, sometimes the pacing was a bit inconsistent - but it was a good, enjoyable, nice thriller.

Holly Jackson's books will do it for me every single time, I swear. It's been a while since I didn't want to put a book down because it was just so gripping.

Whenever I thought I knew what was happening, I was proven wrong every time.
Catherine Lavoy being the one to murder Red’s mom was SICKENING.

Oh, and fuck Oliver. I cant say that enough.

I was confused on why they didn't try checking the Walkie Talkie for bugs earlier since that seemed like one of the most obvious places to me, but it might have been one of those things that seemed too obvious. As in, irl I probably wouldn’t have realized that, either.

I wish there would have been an epilogue, though. (Or maybe I’m just sad it’s over lol)

Those fucking curtains are probably going to follow me until the rest of my life. What’s up with them?

A bit of a slow start, but it picks up about half way through. A little bit repetitive but it was intriguing and that kept me going. I found the characters all a bit unlikable and think that the author did a really great job writing frustrating characters.

I think the idea behind the book was really good and it was well constructed.
However, I found the narrative voice quite hard to stomach. I’m sure it was a creative choice but due to the characters past there wasn’t very many peaks and troughs in their emotion which meant it was always tense. This meant the severity of certain moments wasn’t as tense as it could be.

So I think the plot was good just some of the authors creative choices weren’t for me.
