Wow. J Elle wrote a beautiful, lustrous story with this one.  I love stories where the main character is trying to figure out who she is despite everyone else around her.

This book is a Dark Academic, Gothic fantasy with a icing of romance and a sprinkle of political intrigue.  We follow Quell who has only ever known life on the run and finds her way back into her Grandmother's lush and opulent world of magic and power. But Quell has a magic in her that is dark and if discovered could have her killed.

Quell is strong and resilient, determined to survive no matter the cost. But what happens when her new friends, "found family", and love start to make her feel comfortable and let her walls down.

4.25 / 5 The beginning started slow but I had a feeling that if I stayed with the story it would turn out to be a ride and was it ever!

This book is very appropriate for upper middle and high schoolers. There is only some stolen kisses.

Received an eARC from NetGalley.
3.25 stars House of Marionne was a difficult read because of the staggering amount of information being shoved at the reader at all times. It did live up to the morally gray aspect but not too much of the dark academia for this reader. I will say if one can get through the first half of the book, it gets easier to read, and by the end, the reader will want to know what will happen in the next book.

*Nervous laughter* uhhhh I want to talk to whoever arranged this book. The plot itself was good but oh my gosh... I didn't know what all the houses meant and why they were important, what their powers/abilities were etc. because I felt like they weren't explained well for me to be able to follow along. Also, I couldn't really tell who one of the characters was, it was just a mess for my head to try to follow it. I want to reread it in the future though, for after I finish the book, I find that THE BACK WAS WHERE THE HOUSES WERE. All I had to do was look in the back of the book to clear up my confusion but I didn't notice it TILL AFTER?!

Dnf'd at 25%. This was...not good. It felt really juvenile and was so confusing! Tiaras growing out of your head?? I almost shut the book right then and there. Definitely not for me.

Wow. Just wow. I loved this book. I loved the characters. I loved the detailed descriptions of Diadem, the masks, the Chateau, etc. I loved Wings of Ebony, and I saw that she was doing a book signing for this book (I went and she's super nice). It was Romance Fantasy and I was weary. If any Romance books I read are usually Hallmark type books and fantasy, but otherwise, I don't really read Romance books. I took a chance and so glad I did. In fact it wasn't very Romance. There was a romance, yes, but it wasn't the total focus. I was hooked all the way to the end and then the ending...wow. Granted, it ended and didn't really finish, but it packed in some damn surprises I was not expecting at all.

I will say that this book does have lots of details of information, but then miss some things...and the ending was rushed. However, it didn't diminsh how much I loved this book.
