i think it’s one of crichton’s weakest plots. it was kind of boring and was not engaging. the writing itself just doesn’t feel like a crichton book

This was my first Crichton read and I enjoyed myself! It delves into a niche moment in history known as the Bone Wars and I was fascinated by how close to reality that portion of the story was. I feel like I learned a lot about the beginnings of modern paleontology and our first exposures to dinosaur bones. This story morphed into more of a Wild West story, and while it kept me on the edge of my seat, it stressed me out a lot. Wild West books aren’t my favorite. The stakes were high and I couldn’t finish fast enough for some closure. While written well, the ending/character arcs felt a little unfinished, and I wish Crichton had had the opportunity to finish this book while alive. There is some era-consistent racism towards native Americans as well as other stereotypes represented in the book, but it felt more like it was being true to the time period than trying to promote such viewpoints. Overall, this was an educational and intriguing read with some harrowing moments that kept me engaged.

Dinosaur bones in the time of the wild west…

Dragon Teeth by Michael Crichton is the fictional memoir of a Yale student who embarks on an adventure into the west…to college ancient fossils…

I expected this to be a fun combination of the Great Train Robbery (a highly fictionalized retelling of a true event) and Jurassic Park (you don’t need me to tell you what that story is about). While I did get some decent vibes from the story, it was countered by how generic (and inaccurate) some of the story was.

I should blame myself for my history buff fandom and that Crichton wrote this back in 1974 (long before deadwood was a popular topic) and published after his death so we can never be sure how he might have modified his story accordingly…but it was a fun yarn.

To be honest, this book does do a fairly good job of documenting some of the feelings of the North American “bone wars” even if it takes some liberties, so I welcome it if it gets more people into studying that interesting time of paleontology…
