The Nite Owl story is the best. You get to meet the sexy Twilight Lady, and you get some cool backstory about Rorschach along the way. You don't get much new with Dr. Manhattan's story, unfortunately. Moloch's is good too.

Decent revisit of the Watchmen universe. Didn't feel contrived.

So I always had a little bit of a crush on Nite Owl, especially in the movie version, so it was nice to get to read his back story and learn a little bit more about him (still swoon worthy!). I also liked the banter and relationship between him and Rorscach, I always thought they were an odd, but admirable, team. I also like the lovely little vixen he falls in love with. Definitely an interesting story! Dr. Manhattan is, hands down, the most complex character in the series. His back story may not have made him "more understandable" per say, but it definitely sheds some light. At the very end, there is also a section on Moloch's back story which I found fascinating. As always, color me impressed. I love this series!

I'm not one of those comic fans who thinks Watchmen is the be all end all of the format, so I think I was probably able to approach the Before Watchmen idea with a little more of an open mind than others. I have no real opinion on JMS' overall body of work, he's written some stuff I've really enjoyed and some real stinkers, but overall his Before Watchmen stories were solid. The Nite Owl story was an interesting read, but really didn't do much to expand on the character as he appears in Watchmen. The Dr Manhattan story on the other hand was fantastic. Jon explores his own existence and identity through time, space, and quantum mechanics. He jumps back to his origin, sees different versions of the world where he survived the accident, view the first time he manipulated time/space, and then his meeting with Veidt leading up to the end of Watchmen. It was great storytelling highlighted by outstanding art from Adam Hughes (especially the pages where you had to rotate the book to read them).
The Moloch back up was interesting, but unnecessary, the only real detraction from the material collected here.

Yet another fool tries to write a genius. Nite Owl was fairly good but the Dr. Manhattan segment was just lore fodder

I didn't think I would like this one as much as I did. Nite Owl isn't the most interesting Watchmen and I'm leery of other writers using Alan Moore's voice as Dr Manhattan.
Man, was I way off. I really enjoyed this volume. Everything fit together so well, much better than the other prequels.

As I'm reading through the Before Watchmen trades, it would seem that each follow the formula of having one good half and one bad half. This is no exception. Nite Owl's story was actually the most essential so far for understanding the character a bit more. The reader gets to see how he learned from his mentor Hollis Mason and even gets a peek into his sexual past (but alas, not whatever caused that pesky impotence in Watchmen). Plus, who doesn't want to see Nite Owl and Rorschach teaming up against pretty much anything?

The Dr. Manhattan side of this graphic novel convinced me that any comic of his would be as overly complex and dull as all of those nonsensical 90s X-Men time travel runs. There's a part where Dr. Manhattan is watching himself watching himself look at a picture from the past. Come on now, I'm watching myself in the past reading this part of the trade and regretting it. This story was by far the most offensive in just spinning its wheels and not bringing anything new to the character whatsoever.

There are also two Moloch issues at the end of this trade that carry a distinct Tales from the Crypt tragic vibe, these were a pretty fun read if not also inessential.
