A little bit slow to get started, but that was necessary to lay all the groundwork for the rest of the story. I found the characters compelling and was drawn in by the colonial Singapore setting, an area I had little to no familiarity with beforehand. I immediately sought out the sequel upon finishing.
Graphic: Violence, Confinement, Sexism, Colonisation, Blood, Murder, Death, Injury/Injury detail, and Racism
Moderate: Physical abuse and Child death
Minor: Infidelity

This was an interesting take on a period mystery drama, overall I enjoyed the book for what it was and I am looking forward to see how A. M. Stuart continues the series. As other reviewers have pointed out, I had hoped that there would be more inclusion of the local native peoples rather than the colonizers but things were written tactfully in regards to the European colonization of Singapore.
Graphic: Blood, Vomit, and Violence
Moderate: Confinement, Death of parent, Death, and Genocide
Minor: Colonisation and Infidelity
