I can't decide what I think about this book. I really enjoyed reading as a follow-up to the Bell Jar, but aspects of the book really frustrated me, too.

This might it: At book club we talked about there is an archetypal girl who loved The Bell Jar in high school and is a little to dramatic about it. This feels like the YA incarnation of that girl. But. I have fun reading it. I don't know! No precise feelings on this one.

I'm not sure how I feel about this book. I liked some of the writing, and the plot was certainly compelling, but I wasn't necessarily entirely behind the idea that people who feel big and terrible things have had big and terrible things happen to them. (I mean, of course people who have endured terrible things have emotional responses that correspond to the trauma they experienced, but I would have liked to see a character who was at this place because of who they were, or a mental illness they had, rather than a trauma they experienced.) I guess I just had different expectations for the book than what the book actually was, and it's not really fair to judge the book that way. It was well written, and thoughtful, and smart. I would have liked to see more depth in the secondary characters (I have no clear idea of who Sierra is as a person, or why the Leo subplot is necessary), but the ending was satisfying.

Fun and interesting in a page-turnery kind of way, but maybe doesn't bear too much deep analysis.

it started off strong & then it dwindled. I read this book in 4 days!!!

A magical place where she can reunite with Reeve and their memories. continue reading

This was such a fun, heart felt, mysterious book.

Summary: Our main female character is dealing with a loss and is sent to a school that deals with teens that have some fragile issues. Its a go between for school and a hospital. She is chosen for a special class which is granted these magical journals that help them each deal with their individual loss. As the students realize that it's happening to all of them, they put together and plan and become a close knit group.

I put this in a fantasy slot because of the magical element of the journal but its not necessarily fantasy. More of a light mystery contemporary mental health read.

I enjoyed discovering what happened to each of the student and their stories. Each character was well thought out and likable. I loved the story in its entirety

I HAVE TO UNPACK THIS BOOK.
dark funny mysterious medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Complicated
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

i liked it. it wasn't as much of a stand out to me as other meg wolitzer books I've read, but i think that a lot of that is just because I've been reading adult books lately rather than young adult. I did really like the twists throughout the book, as well as the writing and the concept. It was honestly really solid.

Ahhhh! This book! I loved and hated it.
Loved: how much Jam changed from just being around people who always cared and supported her and never judged her. She has become so much stronger and confident because of them.
Hated: how she was already "in love" with her British boyfriend after only knowing each other for about 40 days. And that freaking ending! What is that?! Ahhh!
