Beautifully written, absolutely horrifying.

I’m glad I read this book, but I will never read it again.

Wtf

It’s pretty much all I can say. I have no idea how I feel about this. I started out mildly confused and not caring for it. I grew to really like it for other parts. I’m going to stick with a middle of the road rating.

I’m not sure I can really put a genre on this either. It’s disturbing plain and simple.

*spoilers and info for the future for me when I inevitability can’t remember why I was so disturbed*

Sasha Stone is a mix of severely mentally ill and a sociopath mixed into one. She is the good perfect daughter and student, until she’s not. Now she’s the bad girl. Or is she? No, not her but her “evil twin” who she found out that she had in the womb but was never born. Never born, never died. Now they share a body and her twin is alive controlling her. Her heart is in love; but that’s not her heart, it’s Shannas. This heart is weak though. It’s diseased and they are dying. What to do? Cut it out of course! I mean...’literally cut it out and mess with everyone that comes into your path. 🤦‍♀️ What the hell did I just read, and why I want to read so much more?! Dark and twisty to the max.

If there's one thing Mindy McGinnis is good at, it's writing mean girls. And when I say mean girls, I don't mean like the movie. Her girls will do anything to survive. They murder, they lie, they fuck shit up. They're MEAN. And I love that! It's so refreshing to have these morally gray and sometimes morally black girls who will do anything to save themselves and (sometimes) other girls.

Sasha Stone is a perfect Mindy McGinnis mean girl specimen. The book looses a star, though, kind of because of that. At some point, Sasha's meanness lost its complexity and became this sort of "bitch is crazy" meanness. And it was too...perfect. I don't know how to describe it. At one point there was mystery, and then it was just like "oh, Sasha Stone sucks".

Still, I really enjoyed this book, and I still LOVE LOVE LOVE Mindy McGinnis.

So, this year I'm really gonna try to read a few more books that have been on my TBR shelf (well, it's actually a TBR case with loads of stacks upon it) for way too long already. One of these books is this book. I think I once found it on Amazon. It has been on my wishlist for a long time, it got discounted at some point and I decided to get it. It survived my unhaul from last summer and last Monday I felt like giving this book a try.

I'm gonna say something I usually never say: I wish this book had not been a horror. I wish this book had been a medical and psychological drama where we're spending some time with the heroine of the story and the issues she's facing. There was a perfectly nice point right before the finale started that would have made a perfect conclusion. Because, quite honestly, the horror wasn't horror enough to be actually scary. Even after finishing the book I still don't really buy the horror aspects of the book.

It also didn't really help that the heroine wasn't a very nice person. Which, once again, wouldn't have been a problem if it had been part of the medical and psychological aspects of this book. Then it would have been very interesting. It also would have given our heroine room to grow and learn. I understand that in this case that's totally not the point of the story. But, once more, if this really wanted to be a horror, it should have been more horror and less medical.

However, the part I did enjoy, basically the entire middle of the book that focusses on the heart condition and all the kids dealing with it in different ways, was actually really well done. There was some morbid humor that for sure not everyone can appreciate. I'm also not entirely sure about the morals of some of these characters, but it therefore felt realistic. Far from perfect, far from pretty, far from romantic, but realistic.

It was interesting and riveting but the ending just kind of had me lost. That’s it? What a weird book.

Wowowowowow. I am into how freaky Mindy McGinnis contemporary books are. This was ... an experience. I honestly was 100% sucked in, stayed up late reading, wished my commute was longer... Sasha is fascinating. I don't want to give much away but this isn't a fluffy book (though it had plenty of LOL moments) - it's a psychological thriller and an interesting one at that. I'm excited to write more about this soon.
