Bleak in the most beautiful way. Pilgrim is a lyrical, soul stirring odyssey, rich with grief, faith, and something ancient and aching. The writing is lush but never excessive, the world sprawling yet intimate; strange and sacred. The journey unforgettable, a long journey, but worth every step.

Atmospheric and appropriately gory.
The first third is an incredible set up and introduction to the world and the characters, but it begins to peter out and wear out its own welcome. Ultimately it is just too long, and despite some fantastic prose and horror it fails to land as well as I had hoped as it slowly became a chore to finish.
That said it did accomplish exactly what I needed it to when I picked it up, which is to scratch that Between Two Fires medieval horror itch, so it lands at a perfectly respectable 3.5⭐️

This was an amazing, heart-breaking, and absolutely frightening medieval horror novel. I was so tense reading this and couldn’t put it down. Despite the character’s obvious flaws and despicable/unsavory traits, I couldn’t help but root for them and wish them a safe journey. This book was much gorier and scarier than I thought it would be, but the author’s incorporation of various myths and religious stories kept me absolutely hooked. I can’t wait to read his other works!
