This book is fantastic. A must read. It is an amazing narrative of the reality of Human bondage, packaged in a unique and thrilling sci-fy thriller. It was hard to put down.

Surprising science fiction historical drama. A real page turned that made me empathize with slaves in a new found way. Watching their struggle from the eyes of someone born after freedom and the pursuit of rights was an eye opener and really exciting way to interpret a story we've heard time and time again. Only now, we can truly put ourselves into their shoes.

I don't yet have the words to explain how I felt about all of it. To distill my major thought on it: the way Octavia Butler leads you to watch exactly how a strong, smart, fiscally independent, creative and educated person could be beaten and destroyed into a position of subservience who even as it's happening, can be justifying it, and attempting to analyse and weigh up the greater good and the ethics and laws of different time periods, is utterly unique. And uniquely terrifying. The inevitable conclusion is all at once shocking, inevitable, worrying, bold and logical.
