this was heartbreaking and devastating. i'm not sure i'll read this book again, but i have to say toni morrison's way of humanizing villains that you start to question your own self is a power! the contempt for young girls, thinking they play a role into being assaulted and raped or the revolting minds of the man who abuse and assaulted these young girls was dark, honest, and horrifying. nothing has changed from this book being written in 1962 to now of 2024 as many black people, specifically black girls wish to be something else. yearning for an identity that was never meant for them yet is the beauty standard. toni morrison was beyond her time, beyond her intelligence when she made this her debut novel.

Beautiful. Haunting. Incredibly insightful Afterword as well. It’s a classic for a reason.

Absolutely love the premise of this book. Especially reading from the perspective of a poc woman it’s easy to spot the similarities that seem to be universal for people of colour. However, a black womans identity being represented through the characters AND the author allowed me to gain access to a new perspective.
