I was in the mood for an R-rated Buffy-style story, and this delivers exactly. Imagine if the show Supernatural aired on FX and you’d have the Cal Leandros series: more gore and swearing, but just as much brotherly angst. At times the characterization slips in favor of wisecracks, but Thurman does a great job with twists, horror, and action.
The book fits nicely within the early seasons of Supernatural parameters: good humor, neo noir characters, melodrama, strong action, and some discomforting homophobia played for laughs. This is a genre book for sure, and it hits every beat well.
I read the whole series several years ago and enjoyed it… beware, the series is unfinished and will probably remain that way. Like any good genre book I remembered the atmosphere and characters best, but had almost no memory of the plot. I enjoyed it just as much the second time around.
