Fatphobia

At this point in the series, I'm not going to do my full review. If you get here, you're either on board with the premise and the writing or (as Granny would say) you ain't. This one riffs on Andrew Lloyd Weber and musical theatre.

CONTENT WARNING:
Spoiler fatshaming/phobia, casual misogyny, ableism.

Lots of references that were fun if you're into musical theatre. On the other hand, most if it was disparaging.

Similarly, we spend some time examining talent vs. conventional beauty or neuro-typical as "normal" but we also take pot shots at fat people and people with disabilities, so not quite great there.

There's a lot of heart, a lot of humor, and a lot that's relatable, but the sort of punching down and scathing criticisms were not my favorite.

This is a "Phantom of the Opera" parody and I have to admit that my knowledge of that opera is more than just wonky. I also have to admit that I'm not much of an opera fan to be honest, but this was fun nevertheless. "Maskerade" is one of the Witches novels. Nanny Ogg and Granny Weatherwax are in desperate need of a third witch ("When shall we two meet again?!") and Agnes who's gone to Ankh Morpork under the name of Perdita to become an opera singer should fill the empty spot. Meanwhile, people are being killed in the opera and poor Agnes, who's got a really good voice and talent, is to sing the part of the lead without playing it. The reason for this is that Agnes Nitt is quite fat. Meanwhile Nanny & Granny are on their way to Ankh Morpork to mess things up even further...

As I said, no clue about all the opera jokes (Miserables Les --- at least I got that one...), but this was entertaining if you like the witches. Nanny Ogg as the bestselling author of a NSFW cookbook really killed me.

What I absolutely did not enjoy were all the jokes about eating and body sizes. As a formerly underweight child and then a somewhat fat teenager and adult I might be a bit sensitive in connection to the matter, but some of the jokes were quite tasteless. Yes, Pratchett makes fun of every body size (even thin & sexy ones), but it wasn't overly funny for me. Agnes is really gifted and her entire existence is limited by her weight. She could've had a career at the opera! And that made me sad. Yes, Granny Weatherwax & Nanny Ogg manage to get their coven back up to the magical number three, and yes, Agnes will be a great witch but I felt that she didn't have any chances to experience anything else, love for example. As if her body / size was so revolting that nobody could be able to love her. That made me sad. And yes, I'm pretty sure that's not the message Pratchett wanted to send, but it's lurking there...

Nevertheless, this was random (so typical for Pratchett), fun and entertaining. It might've been better if I'd been an opera connisseur which I'm really not.

3,5 Stars (maybe more if I get all the inside jokes at some point in the future)
adventurous funny lighthearted medium-paced

Decent addition to the "Witches" discworld series. Not one of my favorites, but I enjoyed the development of Agnes and set up for how she'll be one of the trio now. Looking forward to seeing where they go next.

Oh, I loved this one! I think it probably is my second favourite of the witches books. Agnes is a great character and a nice addition to the coven, much more interesting than Magrat Garlick, I think. The plot was great, the cameo appearance of the Watchmen was great, the humour was great; overall, there's not one thing about this book that I didn't like.
adventurous emotional lighthearted medium-paced

This was my first novel starring The Witches back when I started Discworld, and the re-read didn't disappoint. Granny is strong in this one, even though she's just a bit too tough on Nanny. Nanny is jovial and good natured as always and Agnes give the backtalk Magrat never was able to, even if it's just in her head.
I love the Witches series for all the references to theatre, music and even history, and here, too, Maskerade didn't disappoint. "However did he come up with music about cats, I wonder..."

Classic Pratchett. Snarky, funny, but clever. A satirical spoof of a theatrical mystery, too.
