A fun and hilarious Discworld Witches Book. Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg are at their best and the opera setting is so enjoyable. A wholesome story which had a lot of laugh out loud moments for me.

Took quite a long break from my Discworld Marathon I started last year, but decided to get back into it. Somehow I knew from the blurb that I might not like this one, somehow it looked a bit too much like Lords and Ladies, or Wyrd Sisters... in that it's taking a section of culture that I know nothing about, in this case Opera, and doing a funny old school British humour fantasy spin on it.
Turns out I was right and that's basically what it is. Found myself having to skim through the final half as it descended into more and more slapstick action stuff. And felt as if I was reading something completely out of my scope of interest. It's weird, as I was never interested in Fantasy really, not until I read Good Omens last year, then decided to check out Discworld, and the first maybe 8 or 10 books sold me on the idea that this other universe mattered, that it really meant something, it was a truly interesting form of satire. It was taking vast swipes at EVERYTHING all at ONCE. Though with books like Masquerade it's like "haha, yeah, lets look at this bit of niche culture and make some bad puns."
Looking at the next on the list. Feet of Clay. Seems like that's a sequel to Guards Guards, but is also a riff on the Golem? And then The Hogfather? Which seems to be about Death becoming Santa Claus? Honestly there's a certain feeling on unimportance to these books at this point. Though there's 41 mainline Discworld novels left to read in total, so I only have another 23 left. Maybe they pick up again as Pratchett nears closer towards dementia and maybe decides to start making some grand statements again. But right now, at book 18, the Discworld is "treading water" as the cowboys used to say.. I guess that could be a Discworld book. Oh look, it's cowboys but on the Discworld, haha, thanks for your money now come back next year for Discworld Football.

I don't care if this was published in 1995. The last thing I need rn is to read a book whose humor is at the expense of one of its fat mc.
