You can really tell that they were still figuring out how the whole novel thing was supposed to work.

It is about a beautiful and ambitious woman who suffers a calamity from which she must recover. Left with the care of her five children, she fights against fate and raises her economic stature by flirting with well-connected men. Captivating!

It's one of those books that you have to sit down and read at the start, but that's because it's old. Like all old books, expect some archaic spelling and sentence structuring. Also, i found the "as above" thing that was constantly being repeated throughout a little annoying. That said, it was a very interesting into an insight of opinions on morality in the 18th century and it was more honest than older texts usually are, since the protagonist remains succumbed by her vice throughout, where typical archetypes of defoe's protagonists are that they overcome their problems by the end of the novel. It's a good old book, with a story teller you can't help but like in a way and then hate at the same time (she constantly whines about her current situation, but still goes with it to avoid being poor).

Best of the Defoe novels. Always takes me forever to read, but it's important to my scholaring. The lack of clear timeline or chapters is a challenge, even for those of us who study this stuff.

Read this book in the sole English class I can take in France. I liked that it was in English.
