I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I enjoyed being able to see what happened to Oliver after the book before this one, getting to see his story was nice. I find myself in these book series liking the male main characters way more than I end up liking the female main characters. The female main characters come off as immature and almost teenage in the way they act, and it's a little off-putting. The males make up for the way they literally come to life and discover what it means to be alive even if they are not human.

I've been reading my fair share of fantasy/romance lately. I'm normally accustomed to the mixture of humans, fae, succubi, etc in one world where modern technology doesn't exist. So let me just say that the concept of androids is honestly a welcomed breath of fresh air. I picked up this book one evening and finished it within 3.5 hours.

This series is set in the future during the year 2068. We meet the main protagonist, Becca. She's moved to a new town to start a new life, after leaving an abusive relationship. To celebrate this new stage of life she's in, her best friends gift her with an Android. His name is Oliver and he's literally the definition of perfection, for many reasons. His duties include cooking, cleaning, organizing, and providing any service that Becca sees fit as necessary. Including -other- things. ;)
I'll leave it at that.

One thing I wanted to mention; I love how McClaine portrays the protagonist — she's a young woman who's finding herself after leaving a toxic relationship with a manipulative abuser. The situations we see Becca in are parallels found in many women's lives. Leaving an abusive relationship is extremely difficult. The consequences of doing so take time. I admire the representation of these realities that are showcased through Becca. Also, the author does a great job handling Becca's body image. She struggles with viewing herself positively (another reality) but Oliver loves on her so much and adores her body as it is, showering her with positive affirmations. THIS is what we need more of in the books we're reading. It's nice to experience something different for a change.

Overall, I really enjoyed the ride. I can't wait to read Codi next :)

I enjoyed the book, but was expecting a bit more.
I appreciate some ethical questions addressed here like the romantic relationships with androids and the substitution of people by androids in the workplace, but everything felt shallow. I get that it is a series and these topics can be worked in depth in the sequels, but I wanted to see this in here already.

I am honestly shocked at how much character development and story building happened in such a short book! I LOVED Oliver and Becca. I also loved how this book explored the potential political, socioeconomic problems androids could cause. Wow, blew me away! Definitely read this!

New Carnegie is it!

The audio was so good. Props to the narrator for really giving Oliver that Android feel.

I absolutely loved the mixed perspectives. Now normally it's annoying or not done well so it gets clunky but it works so well in Oliver. We get the dual perspective of Becca and Oliver but also the 3rd person omniscient perspective that gives us things going on in the world.

Beautifully done. Not only do we see this blooming love story, we also see the effects androids are having in society. The things that Oliver and Becca don't really see in their day to day.

Becca's character frustrated me a little bit but I understood her grappling with her emotions in the situation.

I'm so excited to delve into the rest of this series. These New Carnegie androids are so interesting.
