Before I read the back of the book, I was like, THIS IS SAILOR MOON MEETS STREET FIGHTER.

And I was right ha.

I had fun reading this but it didn't feel particularly original or deep, the art by Jen Bartel is gorgeous though and at one point there's a thing called a decacorn which is a unicorn but with 10 horns/spikes all along its back and it's amazing

Stella is a bored teen who's part of the first generation to grow up immersed in a world of virtual reality games. Her parents only allow her to play "Crystal Fighters" — a very bubbly and positive world where you assume the role of a magical girl — instead of fighting games. She stumbles upon a magical girl fight club within the game, and finds herself exactly where she wishes to be. The book was a lot of fun, and I hope there will be a sequel one day!!

I got this as a gift from a friend, and I'm glad I didn't spend money on it. Honestly, I felt bad my friend did for me. She picked it up because she thought I'd like the art and the original concept is cool, but it severely lacks in pretty much... everything.

The cover art and in-between illustrations are great, but the art really loses its charm within the format of a graphic novel (and which I now learned a webcomic). Movements felt stiff during the action sequences. Sometimes, I found it difficult to understand what was happening in certain scenes and the feeling of space in the fighting scenes was lacking. I found none of the characters to be that charming, and the vignettes of the characters' lives outside of the VR world brought nothing to the table. The ominous ending too made me just deeply sigh. The translation from webcomic to graphic novel was bad. It was bad, and it should not have happened.

The comparison of this to Sailor Moon is insulting. The only thing that was remotely fine about this aside from the standalone illustrations was perhaps the outfits, but even those felt uninspired and lazy.

What drew me to this graphic novel was the cover, then I read the premise and immediately wanted to pick it up. A virtual reality game where a glitch leads to a cutthroat arena? Yes, please. Stella could definitely use some more fleshing out as a character but she was by far the most individual of everyone. I really hope this becomes a series as there are a few characters I would love to find out more about, and I'm very interested in the events that were alluded to at the end.

I loved the art style of this graphic novel, so many poppy bright colors and saturated tones. The illustrations themselves were very dynamic and moved the story along wonderfully. It's a fun adventure that I'm excited to see more from if more comes out.

From a writing perspective this comic is fairly simple, though the the clear dialogue and large lettering gives the reader time to appreciate what originally drew me to it, the gorgeous and colorful artwork.

Hopefully the title will have a sequel following its abrupt ending, but either way I'm glad I own it and will definitely re-read it to cherish each glorious illustration once again.
