I really wanted to like this book. The description was so intriguing but I was confused the entire time. A “mysterious competition.” Well it’s still a mystery to me what the competition was. Was it writing music? Where did math and philosophy and art come in to this competition? I wish we could’ve seen whatever it was because I am left so underwhelmed.

I kept thinking about dnf’ing, but I loved The Binding so much, so I kept reading. I wish there had been more about the Rat.
This book was a little too ambiguous for my taste. The Grand Jeu was confusing and never really explained. The writing was beautiful but it just fell a little short for me. I listened to the audiobook and enjoyed the narrators.

The more I read of this, the more I enjoyed it. I love her descriptive writing and I really loved the relationships between the main characters. Looking forward to seeing what Bridget Collins writes next!
