i read so many reviews for this before reading it which i kind of wish i hadn’t done but here we are!!! i loved the premise and i did enjoy the story but i didn’t like the characters as much as i did in the binding. i read a few reviews which said that they found the story and the concept of the grand jeu very pretentious, and although at some points i did wish i could actually see the game to fully understand, i know that the “game” from the glass bead game (which the betrayals is based on) was very also elusive so i didn’t find it too off-putting. but what was quite off-putting were the insistent descriptions of emile as fat as if that and being sly are his only personality traits and that’s why he’s Mr Villain....... AnyWay i liked this book, not as much as the binding but i still quite liked it !

my thoughts are very chaotic and conflicted when it comes to this book. I took my time to read it since the first 120 pages were pure torture for me and I considered to dnf it many times. I was determined though so I kept going. fortunately, my thoughts started changing. the writing and the atmosphere were my favorite things about this book. the author is an absolute master with words. the general premise was extremely into my preferences -dark academia, prestigious school in the mountains, mindfreak students who are expected to create a very complicated game in order to win a competition, drama, politics between all this, etc-.
so even though we didn’t have the best start we surely had a very exciting and addictive middle part when I wanted to keep reading and reading. however there was a huge plot twist and the ending, which did not do it for me. the plot twist was kind of weird to me and the ending did not hit me. in conclusion it is not one of my fave books but it certainly did have some elements I loved.

i don't really know what to write except absolutely not, no, stop, and no, and i agree with the other one star reviews. i didn't pick up on a lot of the stuff throughout the book because my reading comprehension has gone out the window the past week but now looking at it in hindsight it's more like holy mother of god this is so messed up. i honestly can't write anything else about this and other people have put it a lot better but it's actually awful and i wish i'd never read this.

Ooo I was so torn on this one. For the first 100 pages or so it was just fine, I wasn’t bored, but I wasn’t super into it. That could also possibly be because I went into this book with super high expectations based on how much I loved the author’s first book The Binding. But anyway, as the book went on, all these plot threads that the author had slowly woven into the story started connecting and it was masterfully done. I will say, I feel like one place the author kind of falls short for me is the world-building. It’s hard to get a complete grasp on the concepts she lays out because it’s just not fully explained. Also, I actually quite disliked the main character of this book. He does go through some character development, but only at the very end. The rest of the times he’s full of himself, selfish, and arrogant.
