This is the second book in a series about the alcoholic Norwegian detective Harry Hole (pronounced Ho-le apparently), and thankfully I can say from the third book in the series, it got a lot, lot better. Otherwise I don't I'd have read as many Jo Nesbo books as I have.

In this book Hole, fresh off the back of success in Australia (see book 1), he's sent to Thailand to aid the Thais in the investigation of the Norwegian ambassador there. While there he learns about Thai culture, discovers quite how potentially tasteless their sex trade can be, and discovers how some Norwegians live abroad.

It's not a bad book, it's just a bit daft that he gets to travel so much (when he has so many skeletons in his closet), that no one has discovered these issues, and that he's better at solving foreign crime than the locals he's going to help (and should know the country better).

Ran out of time and had to return the book. I'll put it on hold and try again later.

Finished:
A pulpy mystery that wasn't very fun to read. I don't know what it was about this book, but I found the mystery boring and predictable. Even the action sequences were just ok. Maybe I'm not in the mood for this right now or maybe I don't like Harry Hole. I'm not sure if I will read the next in the series.

Dated and a bit pedestrian - I won't be pursuing this series.

Wow. Way better than ‘The Bat’. I’m glad I gave this author another chance. Short novel, I got confused a few times, but good crime story.
