i went into this one with such high hopes, and i honestly think that was what ruined it for me. i loved the chronic migraines rep. i somewhat tolerated the fact that both mcs were writers - i feel like this is hit or miss with me, but usually a miss. i did not check the CW before reading, and that was definitely my bad, but most of the reviews i had seen on tiktok or insta hadn't mentioned it being a "heavy" book -- this one most defintitely was, and it was much heavier than i could have anticipated. i ended up soft-DNFing this like 50% in and left in untouched for almost a month, but i pushed through hoping it would magically get better (spoiler alert: it did not) this was just not my favorite, and one of my disappointments of the year.

One of the best romance novels I have ever read. I loved seeing black love prioritized and celebrated. I would highly, highly, highly recommend to any romance fans!!

I knew this book was going to be a 5 ⭐️ in the first 50 pages. There haven’t been many books I’ve read that the characters felt as human as Shane, Eva, and even Audre. The way their joys, agonies, and everything in between are described is nothing short of perfection. I will admit not a lot of “plot” happens in this book it’s all character development and reflection, but if you love that please read. I’m normally not a second chance romance lover, this one is perfection.

Second Chance Romance, Trauma, 2 1/2 🔥

“You push stuff away that isn’t safe and obvious, Mom, but love isn’t safe and obvious. Love is risky. Take the risk, woman.”

“I’ve been roaming around forever, and I’ve never been anywhere I wasn’t itching to leave.”

Loved watching Shane and Eva’s relationship ebb and flow. Felt very natural and realistic.

I felt like I *was* Eva and Shane. Their emotions were so vividly and deeply described I was empathising so much and felt their emotions so deeply too. A perfect book.

This modern romance lives up to the hype. Eva and Shane have such palpable romantic tension and history drawing you in to their story. The characters stand up on their own with their rich backstories and compelling dynamics. Especially Lizzette, would love to learn more about her. I typically don't like kids who act like adults, but Audre wanting to be a celeb therapist was cute and felt natural to the story.

I also liked the commentary about publishing not letting black authors write about the fun, regular things. Very meta.

Loved this book!
