I give this book the highest possible rating not because it's my favorite book, but because I believe it has excelled at what it sets out to do. Mouton has written, in her own words, a "mythmoir." It's part of a rich legacy of other biomythographies, and it does some incredible new and creative things with that genre. I love the way she explains how important mythmoir can be to a person of color, saying that myth is there to "bridge the cultural gap that slavery severed from our tongues and hid under the ships’ decks." It's compelling, and above all it's very poetic. Her writing is fierce and unapologetic, but it's also really just beautiful. If you get the chance to listen to the audiobook, DO IT.

This memoir reads like a love letter from the author to the readers. D.E.E.P. shared her experiences and created enchanting stories in the same breathtaking prose that I’ve come to expect from her work. I’ve never been the biggest fan of memoirs, but this one is definitely worth the read.
