An excellent read. I enjoyed the easy nature of starting and stopping with the short essays. I love books that spark the desire to learn more or read more as this one did. I have not consumed nearly enough James Baldwin works in my life!
I think I would have liked this better if I hadn’t been reading this for work. Some fantastic pieces and perspectives.
A great book with an excellent mix of short pieces about blackness in America.
A strong and essential collection. Every entry is great, but my particular favorites were Wendy S. Walters' " Lonely in America," Kevin Young's "Blacker Than Thou," Kiese Laymon's "Da Art of Storytellin' (A Prequel)," and Garnette Cadogan's "Black and Blue."
Favorites:
The Weight, Rachel Kaadzi Ghansah
Lonely in America, Wendy S Walters
The Dear Pledges of Our Love, Honoree Fanonne Jeffers
Da Art of Storytellin’ (A Prequel), Kiese Laymon
Black and Blue, Garnette Cadogan
Cracking the Code, Jesmyn Ward

This is the perfect collection of essays for anyone to read who is looking to expand their anti-racism education outside of how to be anti-racist specific non-fiction. These essays feel so authentic and encompass many perspectives experiencing similar feelings and experiences. 4.5 stars if I could!
