As with all anthologies, some were amazing, some were less than stellar. It was definitely good on the whole.

Such an important book for everybody to read. As the NYT critic, Dwight Garner, puts it, these essays are "so alive with purpose, conviction and intellect." Yes. Yes. Yes.

Fantastic!
(except for the one cis/heterosexist essay near the end.)

This was a solid, insightful, and sincerely heartfelt collection of essays. It's quite a feat to draw from so many different writers and get such consistent quality. There were, of course, a few times where I was less interested in the stories being narrated, but overall, I found the anthology edifying.

3.75 stars/5 stars:
An incredibly moving read about racism and racial issues in America. These are personal stories and experiences that various authors share and that help frame racism, showing how incredibly pervasive and affecting it is in a personal and collective level.
My favorite essays were "This Far: Notes on Love and Revolution" by Daniel José Older and "Message to My Daughters" by Edwidge Danticat.
