In the recent wave of novels featuring protagonists with intrusive thoughts, this one didn’t quite land for me—especially after reading Mia Ballard’s winning book “Shy Girl.” Cassie’s harm compulsions in “House of Beth” feel more sensationalized than sensitively rendered.

I also wasn’t prepared—especially as a queer reader—for the level of religiosity. Though Cassie isn’t religious, her marriage into a devout Christian family and the lack of real engagement with how that affects her or others’ sexualities felt like a missed opportunity.

The world-building is uneven, the dialogue stilted, and the ghost story familiar. The ending is unbelievably dumb—but the whole thing earns two stars for the girl-on-girl, autosexual ghost content alone.
