Wow! This book is a dark and intense read. Not what I was expecting at all. This is the story of Elizabeth. Broken beyond repair. Dead inside. Soul blackened from years of abuse, torture and rape at the hands of her husband. A family whom gave her to this madman. When death comes knocking she has no fear as she looks death in the eye and challenges him to take her. Death, Lukyan the monster there to take Elizabeth to her grave. A killer with no soul decides that death is not ready for her and kidnaps her. Elizabeth has went from one cage to another. Her prison is four walls and she cannot escape. But what happens when he makes her live? What happens when you fall in love with the darkness that he brings?
This book is dark on many levels and you really need to go in with an open mind to really grasp what the author is portraying. The characters are deep and disturbing with sadistic sexual tendencies. Pain! A pain that heightens the drive between these two characters, making this book a difficult read at times. A dark story that pushes the readers limits.
A haunting story of despair that will grab the reader's attention. I had a hard time putting this book down. I was like a train wreck waiting to happen as I continued reading, never knowing the intentions of the characters or their outcome. A nail-biting disaster waiting to happen. It was intense and soul shattering. Poetic Justice! A unique story that is hard to put words to describe how incredible this book is.

**AN ARC WAS GRACIOUSLY PROVIDED FOR AN HONEST REVIEW. ALL OPINIONS ARE MY OWN**
Absolutely loved this book! My extent with reading dark romances only go so far and I can honestly say that Anne Malcom is the second author I've read a dark romance by...I think. I feel like dark romances tend to be a bit harder to write because authors truly have to go THERE to make it work. After reading this one, it's evident that Anne Malcom has this down like the back of her hand.
So before I go on,please take note that this is a dark romance with pretty heavy topics. It's not for everyone, if you absolutely don't like dark romances, you will struggle with reading this.
Back to the review. OK, so I don't even know where to begin with talking about the characters. The hero, who has a couple of names you'll have to discover on your own, and the heroine were just so different than what I usually read. They are characters that you have to personally read about or you might not actually like them. It confused me to try and explain them to someone, but in my mind it all made complete sense. Their lives aren't pretty and bears so much darkness and pain.
But they manage to work their way through all of that to somehow find their version of a happy ever after. With the hero's twisted and dark persona, there's also this raw and gritty beauty to it. It's very haunting, but despite all of that, there is the vulnerable side to him that he hides away so well. But with Elizabeth in his world, you see pieces of that wither away... In its own dark and twisty way.
Elizabeth's story is definitely a tough one to get through as you learn about all the horrible and traumatic things she had to endure. It's absolutely unimaginable and tragic. From the beginning, she's a shell of a person suffering from fear and pain, but can you blame her? She has dubbed herself an agoraphobic and 'he' will have none of that, so he tries to break her.
This book had me hooked the entire time, Anne Malcom's writing is pure perfection. She captured the dark and gritty tone so effortlessly. Her writing said so much more than what was written on the page, so poetic and deep. It was hard not to get lost in all of it.
But I will say, that I was hoping a bit more with the plot. I felt like they were just going in circles around each other most of the time. However, it didn't keep me from devouring this one.
Other than that, absolutely loved this and can't wait to read more from Anne. I'm hoping we get more from these two, I wanna know where life will take them next.
Highly recommend to dark romance fans!

So I don’t actually know how I feel about this book. I enjoyed the plot and I think I liked the characters too but there was just something missing. It might be that I didn’t take to the writing style, I’m just not quite sure what is holding me back from giving this 5 Stars. I just think I wasn’t blown away by the book so that confusing me because I liked the personalities of the MCs. Still this was a pretty good book. The agoraphobia was something different that I haven’t read about before. There were times where the characters were stone faced, both MCs, and I get that it’s part of their brokenness and all that but there were times where they were having heartbreaking conversations and there was no reaction. I just wanted to throw a vase at these characters when that happened. Maybe that’s what’s holding me back from giving the book 5 Stars. 🤔🤔🤔🤔

Absolutely Brilliant! It's dark, somewhat twisted(but in a good way), yet absolutely beautiful! It's not your typical kind of hea, but it is the only kind that could be worthy of Elizabeth and Lukyan. Two beyond broken people, that find some resemblence of happiness in each other. Lukyan is sent to kill Elizabeth, but as he watches her he sees into her soul, one that has been shredded by abuse and a terrible loss at the hands of her estranged husband. So broken she is ready for death and welcomes it. This lack of any emotion intrigues Lukyan and finds he can't kill her. Returning at a later date he rips her from the world, the insulated bubble of safety she created. She suffers from agoraphobia, and by taking her the way he did she suffers a mental break. He nurses her back to health and along the way teaches her to fight. Fight for herself, for him, for them. He also feels things for her, things and feelings he never knew he had or could have. She begins to grow, and moves back from the ledge of death she once embraced. She finds herself in love with him and he in love with her. This isn't your typical romance, far from it. Darkness, blood, evil, apathy is all they both know. They both find their pleasure in pain, trading one darkness for another. They accept each other, down to their marrow. He knows everything about her, knows her better than she knows herself. She has seen him at his worst, accepts him for the cold, caculating hitman he is and loves him despite all that.
This is probably one of the most beautiful love stories I have ever read. I had so many emotions reading this. At first I thought "Wow, they're two messed up people", but as you read you realize that Elizabeth and Lukyan are perfect for each other. They could never find love, or their kind of happiness in anyone but each other. They are like the last two pieces of the puzzle. They fit together perfectly, filling in the whole picture.

Okay, here is the story. I finished reading this book in April. I had so much to say about it but I just could not for the life of me find the words to articulate about Birds of Paradise. I had drafted so many documents with ways of writing my review. I just could not word it better because this book absolutely and undeniably TOOK my soul. Hell, even my mind was STOLEN. Wow, I felt like I was in an episode of Criminal Minds and I was reliving every facet of it. Birds of Paradise left me bare. Left me with my thoughts. Left me with my emotions. Left me sinking in the deepest pool of darkness. Left me lost in a magnificent plot with such complexity. Wow, I was shaken. Wow, I was in a maze of utmost beauty and grit that transcended my heart. Birds of Paradise is unlike any book I have ever read. I was ENSNARED. I was IMPRISONED. I was MESMERIZED. Birds of Paradise caught me in a web and I was stuck in its powerful cage.
Anne Malcolm is a new to me author. Where the hell have I been because this woman can write one hell of a book. Her writing is absolutely flawless. It crept into my soul and completely annihilated me. It was phenomenal. It was vivid. It was explosive kind of writing meant to be awed in a museum. Anne Malcolm made me a slave to her lyrics and rhythms of her writing. She hoodwinked me and stole my breath. Deep. Pulsing. Birds of Paradise was captivating. It was like watching a movie. So colourful. So mind bending. So artistic. Everything in this book just blazed and burned into a inferno. Calculating. Manipulative. Ominous. Birds of Paradise was a puzzle filled with mind games and thrills. Poetic. Heart Wrenching. Unique. Blinding. Dangerous. Heart Ripping. Soul Rippling. Birds of Paradise is a thought provoking dark read but with a clever and crazy story line that will wrap you tight till you succumb. It is tragic. It is broken. It is flawed. It is vicious. It is ugly. It is sinister. But it is one of hell of book that you want to take a ride one.
I have said too much because this book needs to be read while blind so you can feel every word, every emotion and every moment that Birds of Paradise will give to you. Prepare yourself because this book will take places.

Loved the book, hated the ending. Felt like it was a cliffhanger, but the book doesn't seem to have a sequel. Make of it what you will.
