3.5 rounded down. The twist bothered me a lot; it didn’t seem accurate to how teenage girls behave. Otherwise, this was a fun thriller.

This was such a bore- I really did not enjoy reading this AT ALL but I had to know what happened. I almost DNF'd this like 3 times. If you like this type of book, you would like the show "Cruel Summer" or "Yellowjackets." Highly recommend you just watch those instead.

I have to say, skimming reviews before buying this, I wasn't sure it would live up to the hype. Most of the reviews are to the effect of "everything this author writes is perfect" and "this author can do no wrong in my eyes" and I thought "oh okay, her ride or die fans bought up the book and left glowing reviews because that's what ride or die fans do."

Now don't get me wrong I was expecting to like it. I wasn't expecting it to be one of the best books I've read this year, because I've read some damn good books.

This is one of the best books I've read this year. A couple of the twists made me throw my Kindle on the cushion beside me and sit there with my hands to my mouth. (Doesn't hurt that I listen to so many crime podcasts that the way things were said/done/handled in this book had me nodding because yeah.) Like the other reviewers said, it's good to go in with little spoilers, but there must be a TW for: domestic violence, child abuse, incest, cancer death of a parent, hot car death of a small child. Some are casual mentions, some more important to the story.

Only thing I can complain about it pacing wasn't super at times, and some of the medical stuff was not quite accurate to how it would actually happen. But I don't see that being a dealbreaker for most people (neither were dealbreakers for me).

3.5/5 First half was mid but the second half and the ending saved it.

That weekend was supposed to be a fun, secret getaway. Ditching prom, a lake house, hiking, camping, drinking, just Claire and her best friends, Kat and Jesse. But something goes horribly wrong and Claire can't tell anyone what happened. She has no idea why she was the only one to come down from the mountain they all three hiked. Claire struggles to regain her memories and as the months pass with no news of her friends' whereabouts she grows more frustrated. Taking matters in to her own hands, she resolves to get answers. This was a fun thriller. Complex relationships, plenty of red herrings, and big twist will keep readers wondering about what really happened that weekend.

Claire wants to spend the weekend with her friends. She just broke up with her boyfriend and now isn’t the time to sit at home when everyone else is at prom. Claire and her friends hike up the mountain to camp, but she is the only one who comes down. She also doesn’t remember anything after Friday, when they arrived at Kat’s family’s place. What happened during the missing time on the mountain? Are Kat and Jesse alive?

That Weekend is a stand-alone mystery that will quickly grab the reader’s attention. Claire discovers that there are secrets everywhere and not everyone has her best interests in mind. Thomas has written a novel that made me want to stay in one place so I could keep reading it. All the questions do get answered in the end and everyone who enjoys a good suspenseful book should give this one a try.

Whoah!

That Weekend, Kara Thomas' spine-tingling thriller, will keep you guessing for however long it takes you to get through the jagged switchbacks of the plot.
Despite her recent breakup, Claire goes through with her plan to escape to her friend's family's lake house over prom weekend with her two best friends. When she is discovered alone and injured on the mountain, she cannot remember anything about the previous 24 hours.
Where are Claire's best friends, Kat and Jesse? How did Claire end up with a gash on her head? What will Kat's family say when they discover the teenagers used the lake house without permission?
The biggest question, the one Claire is most afraid of, is: Did she hurt her friends?
A couple of notes on this book.
First off, Kara Thomas is relentless. I haven't read any of her other thrillers but am sure to look them up. She does a fantastic job of centering young adult characters with their concerns and teenage baggage while still creating a narrative that will interest adults.
Secondly, this thriller is DARK and also very sad, in a disturbing way. There are significant content warnings at play here, with troubling topics including abuse, violence, suicidal ideation, and alcoholism. While it's a Young Adult read, it deals with concepts and problems that might be inappropriate for younger readers.
Third: the story unfolds deliciously. The pacing, timing, and narration fluidity are superb. While the unreliable/amnesiac narrator is a bit overdone these days, it lends itself well to the book's overall plot.

On the fence so I’m giving it a 3.5. It was a fast moving, quick read. You kind of guess early on what might’ve happened that night, however, an abrupt plot twist at the very end keeps the book from being completely predictable. So, this is where you get conflicted. You’re happy there was something you didn’t expect, but you’re also left thinking “did it have to be THAT?” Immediately got on here to read other reviews to see if anyone felt the same. The pacing and writing are good, but not sure how I feel about the resolution.

I thought this story had a really good concept & the first half of the book was strong, but as I was reading the second half, I thought that the story was falling apart.

The majority of the story is told from Claire’s perspective.  For the most part, I enjoyed seeing what happened before & after that weekend.  I loved the way that the uncertainty was played out - there’s minimal traces of Kat & Jesse and with Claire not remembering anything, anyone could have done something, including Claire.  However, the second half starts & I felt that the story started to fall apart.  By the time I finished, it felt like most of the twists had been added to the story had been added just so there were twists and I was left feeling disappointed.
