I hate the way this ended. But still good overall.
dark mysterious tense medium-paced

This book fell a bit flat for me. The characters were not very well developed and I really couldn't bring myself to care what happened to them. The big reveal as to what happened that weekend also seemed completely out of character and contrived.

When I heard there was a weird plot twist at the end of this book I was curious but I wasn’t expecting THAT. I’m sorry but I’m not really sorry - that completely ruined the book for me. It’s disgusting.

I also couldn’t care less for any characters in this book.

The book is still good despite that - it had me entertained for my first week of college so I’ll give it some credit.

I was able to read this ebook through NetGalley!

Kara Thomas can certainly keep readers on the edge of their seats! I liked this better than The Cheerleaders-- the last half of the book was unpredictable, captivating, and well written. I think that Thomas writes perfectly for young (and old!) readers, and I will definitely recommend this to students.

I couldn't help but feel for the main character, Claire. She felt well rounded and realistic. Thomas definitely doesn't skimp on developing her characters, and I would recommend this over One of Us is Lying.

This book really captured my attention and was hard to put down once it started. Though with that being said, the ending wasn't where I thought it was going and led it to a then 4-star read.

A thriller with actually good pacing, a believable investigating protagonist, and a fun bonkers ending? Who knew that this kind of book was lurking in the young adult section.

Claire and her two best friends, Jesse and Kat, go camping on prom weekend. Claire just dumped her cheating boyfriend and is struggling with masking her feelings for Jesse. Claire has been in love with Jesse for years, but is trying to bury her crush and her resentment that beautiful, rich, seemingly perfect Kat is dating him instead. After a fun and drunken Friday night, Claire wakes up bloody and alone in the woods on Sunday, with no memory of what happened on Saturday. Claire's search for answers uncovers secrets and puts her back in danger (of course).

There was so much right with this book. In the beginning - while Claire is recovering from her head injury and coming to terms with the grief over her lost friends - the investigation is left to the police. This is so refreshing, as too often the thriller heroine goes haring off to get in the way of the official investigation and accuse everyone of being a suspect. Claire does begin her own investigation later on after the official one stalls, but her actions seem reasonable and appropriate for a thriller heroine. Thomas also weaves in Claire facing criticism from classmates and the public over social and traditional media for being the only survivor, which is a nice touch. Thomas also avoids the pitfall of dwelling too much on backstory domestic drama - while there is some of both (i.e., Kat's family life; Claire's crush on Jesse, etc.) - it doesn't bog down the momentum of the story.

The pace kept up and the action kept coming. This was a fun, compelling thriller, and I'm certainly going to pick up more books by Kara Thomas.
