i like TC boyle a lot, but this one was a miss for me. group of hippies travel from california to alaska. but nothing really...happens. his characters are half formed things here. felt like i was waiting for the story to start the entire time.

Mijn tweede T.C. Boyle. Hij schrijft zo mooi, zo vloeiend, zo beeldend. Twee vrouwen praten en ‘the hounds of gossip went barking up every tree’ . Hoe mooi is dat?! En meer van dat lekkers.
De verhaallijn zat goed, maar niet goed genoeg voor de vijf sterren.

This was a birthday gift from Katie. My only complaint about this book is that not many of the characters are very likable. I hurried to get to the end in the hopes that the hippies would totally self-destruct and freeze to death in the bush. However, the non-hippie couple made me want to live off the land and hunt in a way that watching "Into the Wild" never did.

I really like the story line "idea" of this book....but I kept feeling like the author was high-fiving himself about his writing. overdoing it with his descriptions of things....jezz, just so wordy.
I got bored and barely cared about the characters.

I like the characters in this book. I like 'em all. They are interesting, they do interesting things, they surprise me... all good things for characters to do.

I like the plot of this book. The story is unusual and realistic enough. Most importantly the plot is compelling.

I do not think I am much impressed with Boyle's writing style. I thought that many of his metaphors were clunky and "purple." Climactic events weren't particularly climactic, and the story just sort of petered out. Finally, the narrative style of the book suffers in the second half. There is a subtle shift where the narration no longer tells what is happening, rather the characters tend to tell us or other characters in the novel what has happened. It is weak and disengaging.

Still, I liked the book, and who knows, maybe I'll read another TC Boyle book.
