I'd never read a romance when I picked this up at a used book store while on vacation, and I can say now after a few more books that I'm not a fan of the genre in general, but this book really didn't sit well. There were far too many plot factors that were unnecessarily long and over-detailed, almost reading like a history book rather than a novel. Killing off a main character in the middle of the book was unexpected and could have done a lot better if the remainder of the book kept the same pace as the rest instead of suddenly feeling hasty and rushed. And then the book ended. Suddenly just done; I had expected at least another chapter behind that point.

Will write an overall review for the Border Chronicles (found out the name of the series after book four...)

This book pulled me in from the beginning and intrigued me. I felt the characters depicted had amazing depth and challenged some conceptions I had about that particular time period. This was what you want a historical fiction book to be: a cross between reality and fiction. The scenery was depicted in rich, vivid detail. I felt as if I was a part of the story from the very beginning.
The struggle and joy Cicely found in her life throughout the novel was so honest. She was a passionate, outspoken, and proud woman who deserved the best. She somehow found a way to live that was satisfying despite all the obstacles she had to tackle. I enjoyed the plot twists and turns in this book. Every time I thought I had it figured it out, something shifted or changed. The ending of this book was good. It fit the story and the characters well.

The book started out promising - but I knew it wouldn't be as good as the Sky O'Malley saga.
Spoiler Usually, I don't have a problem when a second love interest is introduced, but in this case, their encounters (initially) were a bit too rapey for my taste. Also, I found myself wishing for some more family drama with the stepmother (maybe some courtly intrigue?) But alas, she dies "off-camera" as they would say.
