I love, love, love this book. This could be because I love hippos or merely because I adore the idea that one hippo all alone calls two hippos on the phone...and then precedes to invite 47 more. :) Excellent rhyme and rhythm to the book.
Clever rhyme and introduction to numbers, amusing drawings -- this is a fav. I think this could work as an introduction to addition/subtraction as well.

Brief summary Hippos are invited to play and work at a party and they arrive in groups and depart in groups and in between go berserk.
Annotation-This is a great number introduction book. The numbers are clear and the text is humorous.

Opinion - This is a great book that has a fun tone and of course silly hippos who go berserk. Boynton's illustrations are wonderful and creative. I really like the end of this book when she writes that hippo misses the other 44, I go back each time and do the arithmetic to see if that is really true.

my best friend read this to me in silly voices so obviously it’s a new fave
3.5 stars. Boynton's style is classic and well loved in our home. My favorite part of this book is when I can yell "ALL THE HIPPOS GO BERSERK!" and we jump up and down and have a dance party before reading the rest of the book. If you don't read it that way, you're doing it wrong.
