I don't know how many times I read my parent's copy of [b:My Family and Other Animals|48132|My Family and Other Animals (Corfu Trilogy, #1)|Gerald Durrell|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1327885239s/48132.jpg|76682] when I was growing up, I'd wager that it was a double-digit figure. I think this was my original introduction to Durrell's world, and I voraciously devoured nearly all of the rest of his works after reading it. All except the rest of the Corfu-based novels. I have no idea why or how I missed them, but I did, and it was only recently that I discovered the existence of [b:Birds, Beasts, and Relatives|48131|Birds, Beasts, and Relatives (Corfu Trilogy, #2)|Gerald Durrell|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1358313193s/48131.jpg|1911207] and [b:The Garden of the Gods|1022568|The Garden of the Gods (Corfu Trilogy, #3)|Gerald Durrell|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1387711202s/1022568.jpg|1911206] when Amazon suggested this volume (the Corfu Triology) to me.

It's hard to describe the amount of joy that I got from that first book. I didn't realise when I first read it just how much artistic license was was taken with a lot of the facts of the tale, to be honest a lot of it is probably fiction. I don't know if that realisation coloured my enjoyment of the two subsequent volumes or if I'm just older and more jaded, harder to please. That said, there were still several laugh out loud moments in each of them and I'll quite probably come back to them again at some later date when I need cheering up. You really can't beat Mr Durrell when it comes to luscious prose (he can paint a truly transportational picture of somewhere, engaging all of your senses in evocation of the scene), naive wonder and hilarious anecdotes.

If you've not read these books, at very least check out My Family and Other Animals. You won't regret it!

I’m not one for memoirs really, I do love animals/nature so thought I’d give this a read. It’s a no from me, so slow.

Incredible trilogy! Filled with magic, wonder and the pleasure of simplicities from start to finish.

I finished this book a few days ago and am sill thinking about it.  The author, Gerald, is a boy in the story.  He writes about the animals he studies and collects with such enthusiasm that when I want to go out and start collecting insects and other creatures.  The family dynamics are hilarious and each of them are written with warmth and candor.  If ever there was a mother who deserved a medal for patience, it is the mother in this book.  I loved every minute of this.  The people and the animals made for an enchanting, entertaining, hilarious read.

This was a perfect summer read. The descriptions of nature and the island of Corfu are beautiful. It really makes you feel like you’re there breathing in Mediterranean air (making me excited for the holiday to Verona eee!)

I’ve already read the first two books in the trilogy but they were just as delightful now as they were when I first read them. I still chuckled over the various family antics - which books very rarely make me do - the language and description of the reactions are so vivid, it honestly feels like the Durrells have welcomed the reader into their chaotic family.

The third book is much the same and I raced through it. Genuinely feel very bad for Leslie, a genuinely unlucky guy.

Interesting to note that as the series progresses less is devoted to descriptions of animals and more of a focus on his family instead.

I recommend to those in need of sunshine and good vibes.
