I liked this! I just wish there was more variety in the poetry. The title made me think this would be about more than just the one quasi-relationship it described but I think this was just a collection of break-up poetry. I definitely want to check out this author’s music now though!

i have recently begin to revisit some poetry collections but this one was new for me. tank does a good job in the beginning and in more "modern" poetry i enjoy some of the wordplay that is used. her storytelling is clear and her views on love are very similar to my own when i was growing up.
however, sometimes i felt as though something was missing. i am not sure if it is my personal preference... but writing poetry (to me) is more than repetition and metaphors. i will be on the look out for more collections or ask for recommendations but it has been a long time since a poem has struck me deeply, and i miss that feeling. unfortunately, i did not get it with vulnerable af.

3/5 stars.

I think there were some poems that were really good but overall a little lackluster to me. I wouldn't reread. Survival Guide, Sun and Moon Folk, and Glare were my favorite of the poems.

"You will notice the vines that you swung on to
avoid his moods swings
You will climb them, and you will cut them at
the root
Why?

Such a thing will grow back if not severed
properly"

"I didn't call you the Sun with the intent for such a
responsibility
I called you Sun because when I saw you...
I shined"

"One day
You will have to teach me the art of overlooking
the Sun"

"And I just knew that you would go so well in my heart
I didn't read your warning label
Knew that you had a piece missing
And hazardous things that I could swallow
Like my pride
But I was OK—
You were on sale and you were stunning"

I don't normally read poetry, but I picked this one up to support the artist.  This book comprises a stpry of a young woman giving her love to a man that didnt deserve her gems. There were poems that I wished were longer or went deeper, and then there were others that I loved and connected with.

Mostly the whole volume is dedicated to her feelings about her first real love relationship with a guy who turned out to be kind of an asshole. A few poems on him would have been cool but I was hoping for more self-reflection or things about her. I really didn’t love that her first collection of poems was all about a guy. A little disappointing frankly.
