A story of two tragedies, a marriage to a terrible man and the destruction of a free country by the US. Nathan Price is a hardshell Southern Baptist preacher who knows his way is the One True Way drags his wife and daughters off to the Belgian Congo. They have no say in the matter since his wife and daughters are to obey him in all matters or feel his wrath. Of course Nathan never bothers to study the language, culture or customs of his flock and this leads to horrible consequences for his family. I'm happy to report he gets his just deserts. His wife and daughters suffer a strange sea change, the novel went off in directions I didn't expect, the daughters' stories are nicely contrasted.

The other tragedy is the CIA coup that overthrew Patrice Lumumba in favor of Mobutu Sese Seko. Mobutu became a horrible dictator for decades with support from the US with tragic consequences to the prosperity of the country.

This book is a tough, tragic read, you might want to pass on reading it if you're not in a happy place. I had to put it down several times because it's so upsetting.

Listened to this one on CD- great book. Might have to go back and actually read it at some point. Started losing me at the end, but definitely worth a look.
