As my review I would like to refer anyone to Chinua Achebe's article about Heart of Darkness. It contains all I have to say about this book.
Although I can understand the literary importance of this novel, I believe I spoiled my experience by reading [b:King Leopold's Ghost|10121996|King Leopold's Ghost|Frederic P. Miller|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1349016374s/10121996.jpg|15019714] first. The true story trumped the fiction for me. If you love history like myself, I recommend reading [b:King Leopold's Ghost|10121996|King Leopold's Ghost|Frederic P. Miller|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1349016374s/10121996.jpg|15019714] after reading this.
Yep! Just epic. Don't know what else to say. Extremely well written. Haunting, harrowing, horrific! The thing with classics (though not all) is that they have the backing of time (and, by extension, of people's tastes through the years) as evidence and proof of their value. And by God! It's a damn high water mark. Why do people even bother writing books if they're not up to such standards? You won't be Conrad, surely. But at least try? Maybe you could be.
Anyway, fuck all that. This book is a gem. No, it's an education. And I've been a philistine all this while for not reading it.

- difficult but interesting read. Writing style is dense & prone to redirections, reflecting it's conversation style. A deep dark dive into European colonies in African & the descent into madness it triggers, it the name of 'civilisation'
