Międzynarodowa Nagroda Bookera, Literacka Nagroda Nike i oczywiście Nagroda Nobla.

I wasn’t in a hurry. I never have to be in any particular place at any particular time. Let time watch me, not me it.

Whew! This is a book in which you must pay attention... closely. The subtleties are extraordinary, and they are a very important undercurrent of this book.

The story felt very disjointed to me, at times, abrupt endings. Moving on to abrupt topics. Abruptly leaving those topics... and yet... Tokarczuk returned to each thing that felt disjointed... eventually. But once I really started actively listening, I began to notice the subtleties that changed my understanding of what was going on.

All that being said, this is not an easy listen... because you have to really think... hard... often. That makes it not a "calgon take me away read"... but all that aside... The writing is really beautiful. The translation is excellent. And stepping outside of my "reading comfort zone" to consider a challenging read is a very, very good thing.

I heartily recommend... but your milage may vary.

This is a complicated book, a series of somewhat interconnected vignettes (for lack of a better word). Some are a few paragraphs long, some consist of only one or two sentences, some are like short stories. There is no plot. The best way I can describe this is a series of ruminations and the book's title, Flights, loosely ties in with them (although you may have to think for a while to see a connection). "Flight" can mean so many things: the act of flying, an airplane trip, a flight of fancy, the passage of time, a set of stairs. You can flee from something or someone, to escape, and you can begin a flight toward some thing or some place. Not everyone will like this book and I imagine some people will throw the book against the wall a few pages in. This is a book that I will think about for a while and probably will come back to some sections, reread them, and think about them some more. Tokarczuk is a wonderful but not always easy to read author.

Flights is a collection of short stories with common themes throughout. I hadn’t been faced with a book like this before and sometimes found it difficult to become engaged and continue reading. Some of the stories were amazing and compelling while others were vague and unsettling.  The translation was expertly done and overall I enjoyed this reading experience.

1/4 of the way in, genuinely can’t tell if there are 2 or 3 or 4 perspectives, the initial “traveler” is absolutely insufferable, and I just do not care how their stories end.

Props to the summary writers for making this seem like a much more exciting read than it was.
