I liked it. Probably 3.5 stars. I've never really felt one way or the other about Sherlock Holmes. But hey. Michael Chabon.
Cute. A veritable yorkie among books. I didn't really see what all the hype was about, though.
I've never been much a devotee of Sherlock Holmes, but Michael Chabon is such an incredible writer that's it's hard to discount any works of his I come across. As always, a beautiful rumination of deep human feeling.
This was a quick read and a surprisingly fun one for Chabon. I had no complaints!
challenging
That has to be the most sophisticated thing I have read since college, or maybe high school. I didn't realize it was about Sherlock Holmes (the author only calls him "old man") - kinda wish I had read the Amazon review first. It might have been more interesting.
It was an interesting contrast to the Lemony Snicket book I just finished. Whenever Mr. Snicket comes upon a word that is slightly difficult, he would define it

which in this case means...
Mr. Chabon, on the other hand, used words I haven't heard since studying for the SAT, strung them all together, and moved on as though he were using normal everyday language. It was definately challenging. And in the end... I lost the challenge, since I still don't know what the train song is, or what the numbers meant, or if they were the same thing... ugh.
i was incredibly disappointed in this: such promise and such a fascinating premise and it just felt as though chabon phoned this one in.
Honestly, I skimmed the last few dozen pages of this book just to get through it. It's an interesting idea, an old Sherlock Holmes far outside of his prime, but the mystery was extremely boring and the dense writing didn't hold my interest at all.

It is a pretty straightforward murder mystery with a parallel mystery about a “secret code”. Some beautiful writing and a wonderful description of bee keeping. Small enough to read in one go.
