Drew Silver was just too much of a loser for me. The main problem with him as a character is he doesn't seem to have ever been a good guy. Why his long suffering family puts up with him is beyond me...
Reading this book is like standing under a tank full of depression and having it flushed onto your head. I hated every character, their miserable existences and complete lack of ambition to improve anything in their lives. It was only Tropper's triumphant "This is Where I Leave You" that made me slog through to the end of this one, hoping for some prize. I didn't find it.
Jonathan Tropper has a habit of making me feel that everything will be okay. This book was no exception.
I really enjoyed this one. Silver isn't the most likable character but I sympathize with him. He is hilarious and so are the other characters we are introduced to.
I feel like Trooper left the ending so ambiguous because he wanted readers to decide the ending. I like to think that Silver survived the operation and is going to try his hardest to be a different man.

Ugh. This book was so bad, and I should've given up when I first thought about it.
The entire book was about a middle aged man who gets a death sentence of a diagnosis, which could easily be fixed with a surgery, but he refuses to get it.
Why does he refuse to get it? Honestly, I still have no idea. My only guess is that he would rather garner sympathy from his ex-wife and his estranged daughter. So, instead of taking this opportunity as a wake up call to get his life back in order and fixed his relationships he screwed up, he decides to just keep ignoring everyone who, for whatever reason, care about him when they ask him, practically beg him, to get the stupid surgery.

Tropper has a formula, and he rarely deviates from it. Middle-aged man experiencing some event that makes him question his entire existence and his connection (or lack there of) to family and friends. "One Last Thing Before I Go" is not the best example of said formula (check out "This is Where I Leave You" for that), but it is a good read nonetheless. Tropper's central question is - is it worth it to live feeling lonely and disconnected, like you have failed at everything? And, if it is, can you correct your path after many years of doing it wrong? He answers these questions, and many more, in a heartfelt and entertaining way.
