This retelling and recentering of the tales of Greek myth has its greatest strength in the way the character of Circe discovers herself throughout it. She shifts from a marginalized figure to the centre of her own narrative and this reclamation is important and successful. The other joy of this is its sense of skipping through the mythical tales that are known, at least vaguely, by most of us. Also at a time when travel isn't a realistic prospect, it's a delight to read a book suffused with Greek sunshine.
