Okay I don't venture too far from realistic fiction so it took me awhile to get used to this mythological world. But once I did the social structure underneath was all too familiar.. the world is a horrifying social hierarchy with a bunch of rules and corruption. And every character is dealt a hand in this complicated caste system with varying levels of power, mortality, protection, ability, etc. And most of being happy is figuring out how to either escape or carve out a safe place in the system that was designed to make you miserable.  It's the core struggles of the human condition told through the eyes of a mythical god witch. 

I think I understand the appeal of escapist literature now. It was like going into a parallel dimension every time I opened this book. Also a lot of the characters and stories are familiar so seeing them brought to life in this way was really cool. Of course she's a classics professor I bet she's in that class going offff

at some points, it felt like i was just reading the odyssey the way she wrote so purposefully. i loved circe’s roles as witch and mother and how so much time seemed to pass so quickly
