I like the idea. The writing wasn’t terrible. And I didn’t hate the main character.
However, the dialogue is kind of cheesy, And there are so many different creatures thrown into this series that it’s overwhelmingly unnecessary. It’s a good premise, but not very well executed.

There is too much going on in this book that it doesn't make sense. Apparently, you're just supposed to know everything that's already going on before reading the first book in this series. I had no idea what I just read. Fortunately, I only bought the first 2 books of the series bc I was not impressed by the first book at all. I don't even know if I want to even attempt the next book or not seeing as how I just read a bunch of jibberish it feels like.
Too many characters and too much going on to be able to keep everything straight. If the book were later in a series where the author had already established the characters and the stories it would be better but it's not like that. I don't even think id give this 1 star if I had another option.

In Guilty Pleasures, Laurell K. Hamilton delivers a thrilling and provocative urban fantasy that blends the supernatural with the human heart in a way that keeps readers spellbound.

At the center of the story is Anita Blake, a formidable heroine who is as dangerous as she is alluring. Her job is not for the faint of heart: she is a necromancer who re-animates the dead and hunts down rogue vampires who overstep their boundaries. But when a string of brutal murders rocks the city of St. Louis, Anita finds herself confronting her deepest fears and desires as she investigates the case and comes face-to-face with master vampire Jean-Claude.

Hamilton's writing is as bold and seductive as her protagonist, and she paints a vivid picture of a world where the supernatural is intertwined with the mundane. Her attention to detail is impeccable, and her characters are fully realized, with all their flaws and complexities. The tension between Anita and Jean-Claude is palpable, and their chemistry sizzles on the page.

Guilty Pleasures is a thrilling and addictive read that will leave readers hungry for more. Hamilton has created a world that is both fascinating and terrifying, and Anita Blake is a heroine like no other. This book is a must-read for fans of urban fantasy and supernatural romance.

It was fine. Took me a long time to get through but it eventually grew on me. Open to reading more of the series.

Since I'm just now getting around to this series, it feels a little dated with some of the tech (beepers, lol). Nevertheless, I quite enjoyed the lore. I think I'll definitely read a few more as soon as I can get book two from the library.

3.75 - this book is just trashy fun! Revisit the supernatural underground world where a vampire hunter tangles with zombies and were-rats
