Great entry in this popular series! Likable family, authentic-feeling grief from their previous loss and fear from the tsunami. Informative and engrossing!

The I Survived series is popular in our school, so I was happy to see that a new title is coming out this fall. The story of Ben Kudo and his experience in surviving the tsunami is very well told. It is tense and action-packed without being too scary. One of my favorite parts is when Ben's brother needs stitches, but he's afraid of needles. Ben, his mom, and the doctor, convince little Harry that the stitches will give him a scar - and he will be like Darth Vader, because he has scars. Suddenly, Harry is ready to sit still and get stitches!

The back of the book has explanations of the "triple disaster" - the earthquake, the tsunami, and the problems at the nuclear power plant. There are also suggestions for where to find more information. Someone who is interested in disasters or famous events in history would enjoy this whole series. Some of the stories, like this one, are from fairly recent times and others are from further back in history. Now that I have read this one, I am curious what the next one will be.

Another short but poignant episode of such a tragedy. This was not my favorite but I couldn't stop reading it.

Yay! I finished this last book - now I've read all in the series, so I can think about which books were better than others. This one is really interesting. I would recommend this to any reluctant reader, or someone who enjoys survival stories. I would rank this title in the top 5 of the I Survived series.

Audiobook- Narrator - Janet Song. I enjoyed her voice and pacing and difference tones for different characters. Good narration. My only complaint is that I prefer male narrators when the main character is a boy. It is too hard to “translate” the female voice in to being a boy character in my mind.

I do like the pattern of this series where they start with the disaster event and then flashback to start the back story. I also really appreciate the true information at the end of the book. It is a clever way to mix facts in to the fiction. My 9-year-old was telling me how the "I survived" books all start with that "hook" at the beginning and then in chapter 2 the real story starts. It is interesting to read a story about a disaster that is vivid in my memory. I can see why kids like these books so much and even as an adult I thought it was an exciting, dramatic read. The way Tarshis balances the sadness of the dad dying with the disaster story even gives the book depth that I didn't expect.

Theme: Military family (air force), father death, survival, natural disaster

Compelling as usual. I was surprised that for this I Survived story, we did not get to witness it from the perspective of someone from Japan, and instead from a boy who was visiting Japan. I suppose I shouldn't have been as surprised as I was that the main character isn't from Japan, but whatever, there we are.

This book came out in late August and I just finished it, in mid-November, about a week after a typhoon barreled through the Philippines and destroyed Tacloban, killing thousands of people. I'm sure kids will be clamoring for this title (as with all of the I Survived books) but I can't help but wonder when we'll get an I Survived about Tacloban... While I thought this was a pretty realistic representation of the events that occurred in Japan two years ago (though what do I really know?), part of me thinks that maybe it was too soon to tackle this one.

Although this isn't written by someone who was in the Tsunami, I blieve that she had done her research. This felt very real to me, though I would like to note I haven't been in an earthquake or a tsunami before as I live in Scotland.

This was my first venture into the I Survived series, and I really enjoyed this book! These books are a quick read, and based off historical events and natural disasters that have happened in the past. I like that the survival tips you pick up from the story could be applied to real life situations, and that after you've enjoyed the story, the back is filled with facts and information about the event the book was based on.
